Welcome to our January newsletter! ☔ 2023 is a going to be a year of growth  at Private House Stays,  with many new features and expending throughout the UK, initially in the South West and London.  We are delighted to be on this journey with you, thank you for your continued support.

Perhaps every year feels more challenging than the last, but 2022 really does stand out as a particularly difficult one.  However, we believe that spending time acknowledging the challenges, trying to understand them, make sense of them, thinking through the implications and finding new and different ways to solve and move forward is what keeps us positive. Even through the most difficult of times, there is progress.

We have expanded the map to include the whole of the UK and are on a mission to help owners of short term accommodation whether that be a small hotel, a B&B, pub or Inn and self catering properties, save a fortune. We want to help educate  owners in ways they can  support their local communities by booking direct rather than spending millions with the large online travel agents.  We are prioritising and focusing  on new innovation for our website and our users. We will continue to support the needs and opportunities for others and try and make the world a better place.

Ortolan House B&B
  1. Ortolan House is a large Georgian townhouse with notable history, dating from the 1780s and situated in the leafy conservation lanes area of central Lerwick, Shetland Isles  overlooking the harbour.
Uig Lodge
  1. Uig Lodge is located in one of the most beautiful areas on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis.   • The Castle Inn is located in the beautiful village of Dirleton, East Lothian  between the seaside towns of North Berwick and Gullane. The Castle Inn looks over the magnificent Dirleton Castle, the twelve-century stronghold of the De Vaux family.

Scottish Travel Research 2023

Travel Research from the past few years and what it is expected to reach in 2027. If you are planning on jetting off in 2023, then make sure to check out the link below to see what locations are available and learn a little bit about each location.

The top 5 city destinations in 2022 were Paris, Dubai, Amsterdam, Madrid and Rome. 

As you can see in the chart below it shows the key trends and increased spending, it also shows the percentage increase in likeness to rebound of tourism spending, suitable travel feature and also sports eco-tourism and wellness travel packages.

Do you still need to apply for a license? 
Still need to apply for a short term let license? 

The date in which existing hosts must apply for a short-term let license is now between 31st March 2023 to 30th September 2023. This is a one off 6 month extension taking into account the wider economic circumstance's of the cost of living crisis that is placing pressure on existing short-term let hosts and businesses at a time when they are organizing and budgeting for work regarding the new licensing requirements.

Save the Self-Catering Sector in Scotland.

On the 1st of October 2022, Short-Term Let licensing was introduced across Scotland by the Scottish Government. Ralph, who owns a Self Catering property in Edinburgh, has started a Crowd Justice Fundraiser to challenge the City of Edinburgh Council with a Judicial Review as the regulatory committee of the Edinburgh Council passed the city's licensing scheme.

There is no sign that significant operators will gain a licence that puts self-catering properties at risk and could wipe them all out, and future events, like the Edinburgh Festivals, will be at risk. The aim is to hope the court will determine all of the parts of the current licensing legislation that the Edinburgh City Council will go back to and create a scheme that is fair, fit for purpose and safeguards the self-catering industry.

Having deliberately avoided signing up with any of them I was more than cautious when PHS invited me to join in 2014.  My worries were unfounded. PHS is truly a site that widened our market.  Existing (and new) customers can book through our own website without any commission charges using the same PHS booking engine, and PHS generates further business at a reasonable commission.

Would you recommend Private House Stays to other owners?

If you don’t have a fully integrated booking system, then we would recommend PHS.
